Oct. 23, 2014—Thirty-three CFISD athletes represented the district with several gold, silver and bronze medals as CFISD hosted the Special Olympics of Texas Area 4 Swim Meet on Oct. 4.

The event was highlighted by a thrilling 4x25-meter relay victory by team members Julia Mostyn of Salyards Middle School, Taylor Rhuleof Langham Creek High School, Caitlyn Ripley of Cypress Creek High School and Jill Philipbar of the Carlton Center.

Trailing half a length on the final 25-meter leg of the relay, Philipbar drew neck and neck with the leader before reaching the wall a length ahead of the competitor with one final kick.

“The crowd was beside themselves cheering Jill and cheering the athletes, but most importantly, cheering the achievement, because that’s what Special Olympics is all about – achievement,” said Jordan Philipbar, Jill’s father. “Achievement of the individual, achievement of the team, the family and caregivers, coaches and volunteers. We all are winners when allowed to participate with these courageous athletes.”

Philipbar brought home the gold medal in the 50-meter freestyle, the 50-meter backstroke, the 25-meter breaststroke and the 4x25 women’s relay – along with the help of teammates Mostyn, Rhule and Ripley.
